‘Of course I have been involved in Change Management’ I heard myself saying………… and I had. Everyone on the Prosci® Change Management Certified Practitioner course had. The only problem is that most of us are doing it our own way, based on our experiences from our working and personal lives.
Having spent over 24 years in the British Army, I was used to change, and what struck me having completed the Prosci® Certified Practitioners course was how elements I was being taught fitted in with the whole ethos of ‘Mission Command’.
Essentially, in the Army ‘Mission Command’ is Change Management. It combines centralised intent (what your Sponsor wants to achieve) with decentralised execution (how middle managers and employees are to use their skills and resources to achieve the intent). Mission Command promotes freedom, speed of action and initiative within defined constraints. Sounds pretty much like running a project to me I hear you say, and you would be right.
Having held the role of Change Manager in the Army, some of the ‘projects’ that we were asked to undertake took a lot of persuasion. Let’s face it, it’s not every-day that someone is asking you to perform a task where you may be putting your life at risk. Now that takes some amount of change management to achieve!
This is where learning about the Prosci® ADKAR model was a lightbulb moment for me. It helped me realise that whilst I had been involved in change management, I had been missing the theory and knowledge provided by Prosci® to ensure a solid foundation and reinforce change. ADKAR helps to bring those elements together into a practical process for change management, and we know from Prosci’s® research that projects are 80% more likely to achieve their objectives when using effective change management, and ADKAR forms part of this.
Today as a certified Prosci® Practitioner I can utilise the ADKAR model in a number of ways, and sometimes I look back at my days in the army, and wish I knew then, what I know now. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
